Campus buzzed with activity a week before the start of fall quarter as thousands of Mustangs moved in, and new and transfer students gathered on campus to kick off a time-honored tradition: the Week of Welcome.

The award-winning campus program, which stretches back more than 60 years, brings new students together with more experienced student mentors who introduce them to campus life and critical resources for a successful college career.

This year, more than 6,400 students and 547 WOW leaders participated in WOW, according to Dale Stoker, director of New Student and Transition Programs. Activities included a carnival that lasted for three nights and featured a Ferris wheel, a DJ, mini golf and arts and crafts.

Second-year agribusiness student and first-time WOW leader Tristan Sackman said that he knew going into the week that it would be a great way to meet people and introduce them to Cal Poly, but it exceeded his expectations. His favorite part of the week was taking his WOW group kayaking in Morro Bay, then out for sandwiches at High Street Deli.

“WOW really highlights the strong sense of community at Cal Poly. You’re not just leading a group, you’re creating lasting memories and helping shape someone’s first impression of college life,” Sackman said. “It’s a special experience, and I feel lucky to have been a part of it.”

Meanwhile, more than 5,000 first-year students and 2,640 second-year students moved into campus residence halls during the week, according to University Housing.
