United by Excellence Latinx/e Heritage Celebración
Attended by 196 High-Achieving High School Students
Strategic Enrollment Management’s (SEM) United by Excellence and Admissions teams, with the help of the Office of University Diversity and Inclusion, La CASA Latinx/e Cultural Center, and all six academic colleges hosted 196 high-achieving 12th grade students from Wonderful Education across the Central Valley region, Santa Maria Joint Union High School District, Lompoc Unified School District, Salinas Union High School District and Lucia Mar Unified District in a day-long celebración held Oct. 11. Keynote speaker Matthew J. Melendrez (Mental Health Clinician, Cal Poly Professor and Consultant) welcomed students with a moving speech focusing on Latinx/e identity before they toured campus. Following the tour, students attended a Learn by Doing workshop and a Resource Fair, watched cultural club performances and participated in Latinx/e topic-based lectures. The event was inspired by the university’s goal of becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) as well as United by Excellence’s aim to instill a college-going culture and increase higher education student preparation experiences for historically marginalized, underserved and/or underrepresented student populations.

The Importance of Regular Software Updates
Stay Secure
Week 4 of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month highlights the importance of software updates. Keeping devices up to date helps protect against vulnerabilities and cyberattacks. Cal Poly IT handles updates for work devices, but for home devices, follow these tips: enable automatic updates, only download software from official sources, avoid phishing pop-ups urging updates and regularly check for new updates. Since 2004, Cybersecurity Awareness Month has promoted awareness and collaboration to enhance online security.
New Entrances Open
P Trail Access
The P Trail entrances have moved to accommodate the ongoing construction of Cal Poly's new housing, which began over the summer. Visitors can now access the trail from two new locations: one near the Cerro Vista Loop exit and another behind Sierra Madre volleyball courts. There are signs along both paths to guide hikers.

Submission Guidelines
Cal Poly Report (CPR) is Cal Poly's official employee newsletter, designed to communicate information about officially sanctioned university news or events to faculty, staff and administrators.
All announcements, events and other listings and information must be faculty- and/or staff-focused. Submissions may run only one time — with the exception of Catastrophic Leave announcements and Employment Opportunities, which can run up to two consecutive weeks. Items are strictly limited to 100 words and should, whenever possible, provide a link to additional information online.
To help ensure CPR continues to contain only relevant and approved information, submissions are required to come from or be approved by the employee designated to approve submissions in the respective colleges, units and work areas. Entries submitted by those other than the designated approver must be accompanied by an approval form signed by the unit's approver. CPR is published on Wednesdays weekly during the school year, except during academic breaks, and monthly in the summer. The deadline for each issue is 5 p.m. the Thursday prior to publication.
